The system adds an HDR background and new security features.
Microsoft has announced the release of the Windows 11 update, version 24H2, the next major update to the operating system (also known as the 2024 Windows 11 Update).
Windows 11 24H2 began rolling out in May to enterprise users enrolled in the Windows Insider for Business program through the Release Preview channel. The update also appeared on PCs with Copilot+ in June, when users unexpectedly found it on their devices.
"Today [October 1] the release of the Windows 11 2024 update, also known as Windows 11, version 24H2, begins. This update replaces the current version of the OS and includes new key elements necessary to implement transformational AI capabilities and improve performance," the company's website says.
The new update continues the annual cycle of new feature releases. It also extends 24 months of support for Windows 11 Home and Pro versions.
Updating devices running Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 will require a pre-update in May and a complete replacement of the operating system.
New features in Windows 11 24H2
The Windows 11 2024 update includes many new features such as AI-powered capabilities, HDR support for background images, improved power saving mode, improved hearing aid support using Bluetooth LE Audio, and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility.
In addition, the Sudo function has been added to execute commands with elevated privileges, the Rust programming language has been integrated into the Windows kernel, voice clarity has been improved, and changes have been made to the taskbar, system tray, File Explorer and settings.
The new AI-powered features will only be available on PCs with Copilot+, first for Windows Insider members, and then gradually roll out to all Windows 11 users starting in November.
Microsoft has introduced a redesigned Windows Recall feature that includes security and privacy improvements, with the ability to disable or remove it at the request of users. This update will be available on Arm-based devices this month, and for Intel and AMD processors in November.
In addition, the 2024 Windows 11 update introduces improved search that understands natural language, as well as low-resolution image enhancement features and image editing tools in Paint.
Microsoft also announced the Click to Do feature, which helps simplify the workflow by placing interactive elements on top of the screen to perform quick actions on images or text. This feature does not transmit data to Microsoft servers and is optional, it can be disabled in the settings.
How to install Windows 11 24H2
The update will begin rolling out in the coming weeks for devices that already have Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 installed. To enable the update, you need to go to "Settings" > "Windows Update" and enable the "Get updates as soon as they become available" option.
If a device does not support the Windows 11 24H2 update, it will be locked by the security system until the issue is resolved. This is usually due to software or driver incompatibility, so it's a good idea to update them to the latest versions.
Version 24H2 is also available through Windows Server Update Services, Windows Update for Business, and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft recommends that enterprises begin a gradual rollout of the update to verify the compatibility of their apps and devices with the new version of the operating system.
In addition, the release of Windows 11 24H2 introduces a new version of the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) – Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. This version is designed for specialized environments, such as manufacturing and healthcare, where long-term update stability is important. Support for Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 will be provided for five years, while Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 will receive support for ten years.
The Cortana, Tips, and WordPad apps will be automatically uninstalled after installing the Windows 11 2024 update.
