Police officers in Volgograd detained fraudsters who stole money from dating site users by blackmailing them, the press service of the Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Volgograd region reported.

According to her, a 25-year-old Volgograd resident contacted the police, who said that he responded to a girl's ad on a dating site, and then went to a meeting.

Instead of the girl, the man was met by five unknown men in black masks. They introduced themselves as law enforcement officers and offered to settle the issue of non-prosecution for allegedly seducing a minor during correspondence for 920 thousand rubles, the police said.

The victim handed over 120 thousand rubles.

Another application was received from a 24-year-old resident of Volgograd in mid-January of this year. Under a similar pretext, 140 thousand rubles were stolen from him.

As a result of operational measures, the criminal investigation department officers detained the suspects. They turned out to be five Volgograd residents, aged from 17 to 20 years.

"The police found that the detainees posted downloaded photos of girls on the dating site, entered into correspondence with men on their behalf and made appointments. Hiding their faces under balaclavas, the attackers introduced themselves as law enforcement officers and reported that the men's pen pals were minors," the Interior Ministry said.

Two suspects were given a preventive measure in the form of house arrest, three-in the form of recognizance not to leave and proper behavior.
