24 hours and tick-tock goes by... What does Musk expect after the EU ultimatum?
The European Union has issued an ultimatum to Elon Musk: eliminate disinformation about the situation between Israel and Hamas on Platform X within 24 hours. The platform faced the problem of spreading graphic content, violence and hate speech in connection with this conflict.
In a letter to Elon Musk, European Commissioner Thierry Breton expressed concern about fake images on Platform X related to military operations and video games, and stressed their misleading nature.
Outside watchdog groups said the platform is rife with misinformation about the war, whose employees, including a team of content moderators, were taken down by Musk after he bought it last year.
Fake and manipulated images circulating on X include "repurposed old images of unrelated armed conflicts or war footage that was actually created from video games," Musk said in a letter from European Commissioner Thierry Breton on Tuesday.
"This appears to be clearly false or misleading information."
Breton, the EU's head of digital rights, also warned Musk in a letter that was published on X that authorities flag "potentially illegal content" that may violate EU laws, and "you must be timely, diligent and objective" when removing it.
The platform responded by saying that it is making every effort to resolve this crisis situation. They continue their policy of allowing users to help assess what might be misinformation.
Emerson Brooking, an analyst at the Atlantic Council, criticized Musk for recommending tracking the events of the war through specific accounts, while one of them, according to Brooking, distributes toxic information. In turn, X said that it has strengthened measures to combat anti-Semitic speech and deleted hundreds of accounts that try to manipulate popular topics.
