How the work of intelligence agents has changed with the introduction of new technologies and AI.

The CIA, which usually keeps its methods of work in the shadows, has openly announced the use of generative artificial intelligence tools to optimize the work of its analysts.

As part of the ServiceNow Federal Forum, one of the agency's technologists spoke about how the CIA uses generative AI to facilitate the work of analysts, emphasizing that the innovation does not threaten jobs, but, on the contrary, helps to focus on critical tasks.

Gary Novotny, head of the CIA's ServiceNow management program, emphasized that senior agency managers are optimistic about the introduction of generative AI, seeing it as a help, and not a threat to the existing staff. According to Novotny, AI frees up analysts ' time by unifying the knowledge base, simplifying the search for answers that previously required accessing various databases and sites to collect open intelligence information.

In January, CIA officials confirmed the development of ChatGPT-style AI for use in the intelligence community, which will allow you to receive summaries of public information with citations and conduct dialogues with users. Novotny notes that the CIA's work with generative AI goes beyond simple automation, involving not only determining the processes necessary for automation, but also actively requesting data from databases.

For organizations considering implementing generative AI, Novotni advises a "crawl, walk, run" approach, starting small — from verifying business processes and implementing trial projects to large-scale implementation, taking into account infrastructure capabilities and the need for two-way communication with management and users to ensure mutual understanding and improve processes. The key is to make sure that the new technology does not deprive workers of their jobs, but rather gives them more time to complete basic tasks.

Recall that the US intelligence service recently announced a new strategy for working with information from open sources, intending to expand and improve data collection and analysis against the background of a constantly growing flow of information.
