VTB: fraudsters' activity increased by 30% ahead of sales season.
In anticipation of the sales season and the upcoming "Black Friday" at the end of November, fraudsters' activity increased by 30%, VTB reported on November 22. They warned that Russians should be especially vigilant with fake store websites, false advertising links and announcements of super discounts. The share of these scenarios in November could reach up to a third of all attacks by fraudsters, the credit institution emphasized.
Thus, scammers create fake store websites that are identical in appearance to well-known brands and offer products at big discounts. In this way, they try to steal bank card data or collect payment for non-existent products.
In addition, fraudsters send out fake promotional offers and false links to pre-order discounted products in order to gain access to customers' bank cards and accounts. After payment, such products are either not delivered or turn out to be counterfeit.
In addition, scammers post ads about super discounts in messengers, including closed chats. If the user follows the link, he will download a malicious APK file disguised as an application for receiving promo codes or discounts. After installing it, scammers gain access to passwords, one-time codes and other confidential information and can manage bank accounts without the victim's knowledge.
Nikita Chugunov, Senior Vice President of VTB and Head of the Digital Business Department, reminded that simple security rules can protect funds and avoid unpleasant incidents with financial fraudsters: you cannot trust strangers, you need to read carefully the SMS from the bank, and you should not install unknown programs on personal devices.
"Remember the main rule: use official websites and do not follow strange links that you receive even from friends in messengers. If you have already entered your data, urgently contact the bank to block your cards and accounts," Chugunov added.
On November 17, Evgeny Pankov, head of projects at the .RU/.РФ domain coordination center, told Izvestia that there has been a steady increase in phishing attacks conducted through messengers, especially Telegram and WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation). According to him, 2,374 domains imitating Telegram have been blocked in the RuNet in the first 10 months of this year, which is 2.2 times higher than the same period last year. The number of blocked domains for the second messenger has grown more than fivefold — from 205 to 1,036.
