Attackers block devices and gain access to accounts.

Fraudsters in Russia have begun to use a deception scheme aimed at users of banking applications more often, RBC reports with reference to VTB Senior Vice President Nikita Chugunov, head of the digital business department. In September 2024, about one in ten calls from attackers via messengers was related to a request to update the banking application.

According to Chugunov, this type of fraud quickly spread: in the first half of September, the number of complaints from bank customers about such calls increased sixfold. Fraudsters introduce themselves as bank employees and convince the victim to urgently install the "correct version" of the banking application, threatening to block accounts and cards in case of refusal.

The victim is sent a link to a supposedly updated application, after clicking on which the smartphone screen is locked. Fraudsters gain access to the user's account in the application, the client receives an SMS code, with the help of which the attackers withdraw money from the account.

The bank recommends that citizens stop talking if the interlocutor insists on updating the application, and contact the bank to temporarily block their personal account in order to prevent possible theft of funds.
