Unable to pay Outside.See cashier please!!!

Hi guys :While I was driving to Quebec From Ontario I put gas on the way but I notice that:
I used and Amex to Fill Up my car and I was able to Pay Outside in the PUMP, ok....
Because I have a 7.something liter car Second Time I use a MC but this Time when y try pay outsite in the Pump , i gut this MSG:Unable to pay at the Pump , please see cashier! and at the Same time cashier told me tru the intercome that my card need ¨signature autorization ¨... Of course I never when to see the cashier , but by misstakes i did pay with the same card inside another gas station and it was aproved :beer ¨¨but paying inside¨¨¨¨
Amex and MC card that I had where all Credit(no Debits) and from the same Bank from USA. Now my questionSssss
1-Why I need Signature autorization in Some Cards when bouth are Credit and SAme Bank Issue???
2-Is that afect the payment autorization (for explump self pay and Instore Selve pay authorisations)???

I will Apreciate also If someone explaid more about this With Bebits card

are you sure cashier wasn't asking you to sign the receipt?

lol they only needed signature hence system is old (driving away without paying or gas will cost you license btw...)
