Microsoft is ushering in a new era of security where you don't have to sacrifice convenience.
Microsoft has introduced new features for Windows 11 that will improve the use of the increasingly popular Passkeys. Users will now be able to create, save and sync access keys with the updated Windows Hello interface.
Passkeys are a convenient and secure alternative to passwords. Instead of entering a username and password, you can log in using facial recognition, fingerprint or PIN code, as is already implemented in Windows Hello. These keys are stronger than passwords, which makes them especially attractive to use. While passkeys were already available in Windows 11, they can now be synced, making them much easier to use.
When you create a new key on a supported site or app, Windows Hello will prompt you to save the key to your Microsoft account. This will allow access to keys on all Windows 11 devices where the user is signed in to the same account.
To use synced keys on other Windows 11 devices, you'll need to set up the feature once by creating a recovery key. This key provides strong protection for access keys and allows them to be securely managed across devices. Microsoft says that security is ensured through end-to-end encryption and the use of a special Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, which is mandatory for new Windows 11 computers.
In addition, Microsoft facilitates the integration of passkeys for third-party password managers. The company has been actively partnering with services such as 1Password and Bitwarden to ensure that users can seamlessly use these providers' passkeys in Windows 11.
These features will be available in Windows Insider builds in the coming months. After the update, users will be able to synchronize access keys between different platforms using partner services. For example, a key stored in Bitwarden on your phone can be used on a Windows 11 PC without having to access your phone, making the login process even faster and easier.
