Inappropriate behavior of X representatives led to a fine from the regulator.
The Cybersecurity Commission of Australia (eSafety Commission) expressed concerns about Google's actions and fined the social network X for unsatisfactory responses to requests about how the platforms detect, remove and prevent child sexual abuse and seduction of minors.
The Commission monitors compliance with the basic requirements of the Australian online security legislation, which allows the regulator to require online platforms to provide information on ways to minimize the number of illegal or harmful materials and ensure the safe use of the service by users.
In February, the agency sent notifications to Discord, Google, TikTok, Twitch and X, demanding to report on the measures they are taking to detect and eliminate Child Sex Abuse Material (CSAM).
The final report showed that Google and X did not comply with the agency's requests. Google in some cases provided irrelevant or general answers, and X did not answer some questions at all and did not explain the reasons why it did not provide the agency with information.
The Commission issued a fine of AUD$610,500 ($385,000) to X, which must be paid within 28 days. X can appeal the fine. It was also revealed that within 3 months after the purchase of the social network by Elon Musk, the effectiveness of automatic detection of CSAM materials fell from 90% to 75%. At the same time, X informed eSafety that it has already improved these indicators.
