Operation Spincaster reveals a scheme to combat asset theft with a couple of taps.

Approval phishing scams are becoming increasingly common and dangerous methods of stealing funds in the cryptocurrency space. Criminals fraudulently (Pig Butchering or romance scam) force users to sign malicious blockchain transactions that give fraudsters access to tokens in victims wallets. As a result, attackers can completely empty the wallets of their victims.

Since the beginning of 2021, phishing with approval (Approval phishing) has already led to losses of more than $ 2.7 billion-a problem much more serious than previously thought. However, blockchain transparency and state-of-the-art analytical tools provide unique opportunities for investigating, recovering assets, and preventing crimes.

Chainalysis has launched Operation Spincaster. A series of operational measures are aimed at curbing fraud through cooperation between the public and private sectors. Chainalysis actively identifies thousands of compromised wallets and provides information for operational actions in six countries: the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands and Australia. More than 100 representatives from 12 government agencies and 17 cryptocurrency exchanges participated in the operations.

During the operations, participants were trained to identify compromised wallets and track stolen funds. More than 7,000 potential victims were identified, worth about $ 162 million. This data helped to close accounts, confiscate funds, and gather information to prevent future scams. In one case, participants were able to contact the victim and warn her about the attack, which prevented the theft of a large amount.

Participants in Operation Spincaster also shared their experience. For example, representatives of the Spanish police noted that the operation brought not only results in preventing fraud, but also strengthened relations between the public and private sectors to jointly fight crime. In the UK, more than 230 victims and 33 million pounds were identified related to phishing with approval. The Australian Police stressed the importance of working with the private sector to identify new cybercriminal tactics.

Cryptocurrency exchanges are also actively involved in the operation. For example, Binance successfully uses the data obtained to track funds, inform users, and prevent further fraud. NDAX noted that joint efforts with public and private partners significantly increase security and trust in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Chainalysis continues to develop the Spincaster operation and plans to expand it to new countries in the coming months.

Chainalysis also provided recommendations that should be taken into account in the fight against cybercrime and its prevention. The company claims that fighting fraud requires a comprehensive approach that includes educating users, proactively monitoring transactions, and enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement agencies with analytics tools and training.
