The battery giant has promised that the plants will start operating in 2 weeks. It looks like something went wrong…

A major German battery manufacturer, VARTA, has yet to resume production at its factories-two weeks after a major cyberattack.

On February 22, the company issued a statement: "At present, there is no exact data on how long it will take to eliminate the consequences of the attack and fully restore production at all five sites. However, it is expected that the first workshops will gradually return to operation next week."

Factories are located in Germany, Romania and Indonesia.

The company produces a wide range of batteries and energy storage devices for domestic and industrial use, including lithium-ion miniature batteries and external batteries. In 2022, its revenue was approximately $ 873 million.

VARTA specialists first detected the cyberattack on February 12. The next day, the company said: "For security reasons, we had to suspend the operation of IT systems and production at our enterprises in advance, as well as disconnect them from the Internet."

On its website, VARTA also warned customers that "emails sent between February 12 and 18 have been lost."

A specially created group of experts with the participation of IT analysts and computer forensics specialists is working on step-by-step testing and restoration of information systems.

As noted in the statement, it is now clear that the cyber attack was carried out by a well-organized group of experienced hackers. Representatives believe that VARTA's reliable security systems are extremely difficult to crack, so criminals allegedly needed to show a high level of ingenuity and determination.

The situation was reported to the authorities, and the police have already launched an official investigation. Investigators determine the amount of damage and find out whether the organization's insurance can cover all the losses.

Representatives say that, despite the consequences of the cyberattack, it is already possible to start a number of preparatory works. We are talking about equipment maintenance, maintenance and preventive measures. These processes do not depend on the state of corporate IT systems.

This way, employees will be able to prepare for order fulfillment immediately after production is fully restored. As soon as the information systems start working normally, it will be possible to run the conveyors at full capacity.
