A nightmare week for hundreds of millions of Microsoft Windows users just got even worse.
This week, millions of Windows users have experienced yet another problem. Despite hopes for an improvement in the situation, new developments have only worsened the situation.
Recently, Microsoft released another Patch Tuesday update package, which identified five dangerous zero-day vulnerabilities that are actively used by attackers. These vulnerabilities were quickly added to the catalog of known vulnerabilities, which highlighted their severity.
But even before everyone had time to install the updates, researchers from Check Point Research reported the appearance of a new modification of the Phemedrone Stealer malware. This virus actively attacks computers with an unsupported version of Windows, stealing cryptocurrency from users.
Against the background of this disturbing news, it was reported that Microsoft suspended persistent notifications with the offer to upgrade to Windows 11. Many Windows 10 users took this as a step forward, especially given that the support period for this version of the operating system expires in October next year. However, the joy was short-lived.
The company closed a popular workaround that allowed Windows 11 to be installed on devices that did not meet the requirements. This method, which was used for more than 10 months, allowed users to avoid checking hardware compatibility, which made the transition to a new OS possible without having to purchase new hardware.
This decision of Microsoft may indicate that the company intends to maintain strict hardware requirements, despite the dissatisfaction of users and the slow pace of transition to Windows 11. We remind you that support for Windows 10 will end in a year, and for many users this will become a serious problem.
Currently, Windows 11 is installed on less than a third of all devices running on the Microsoft operating system. Millions of users remain on Windows 10, and a significant proportion of them will not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 without buying a new computer. This causes dissatisfaction among those who consider it unnecessary to change properly working hardware just for the sake of switching to a new OS version. Moreover, the end of support for Windows 10 can lead to a significant increase in the amount of electronic waste, since outdated devices will be unsuitable for further use.
Thus, despite the closure of one of the workarounds for installing Windows 11, the main challenge remains the end of the Windows 10 support period. If a significant portion of users can't afford the upgrade or refuse it, it will pose a serious security risk to millions of computers around the world.
