Today, information security is at the forefront of business protection. Therefore, it is necessary to understand it. We advise any manager to take a course in information security and keep a competent specialist close by.
In this post, we will give 3 useful hacks that may come in handy.
1. Installing Windows on a flash drive
Then it is convenient to carry the system with you and run it on any device, and if something happens, you can destroy the media without breaking the PC. The drive must be at least 128 GB. Type - HDD or better SSD with NVME. For installation, you will need a working Windows, software called WinToUSB, and a Windows 10 image. You can download WinToUSB from the official website. The free version does not support the installation of versions other than Home. Downloading the official image is not a problem.
When everything is downloaded and installed, go to the program, in the "Image" column, specify the path to the image and select the system edition. In the next window, select the external drive. Leave the window with the selection of the partition scheme as is. Click "next", the installation will begin.
If you are going to use it on the same computer, simply reboot, go to the boot menu and select the desired device. The OS will boot, all that remains is to pre-configure it, as is done with regular Windows.
2. Connect to a remote desktop
We are talking about the Windows-Windows connection using the built-in RDP client. This is a special protocol built into the system and ready for use. RDP can be used as a way to initially connect to a remote server, after which you can install more convenient programs, such as TeamViewer, AnyDesk, etc.
To call the program, press Win + R and type "mstsc" in the search bar, or type the name in the search in the main menu. A client window will open where you need to type the IP address of the server. There is also a login-password pair for logging in in your personal account. The default login is "Administrator", the password is generated.
After entering the data, if you are connecting for the first time, confirm the addition of the security certificate. For subsequent connections, you can enable auto-login.
If you are connecting to someone else's desktop, keep in mind that a shared clipboard is often configured by default between the local computer and the server, and the server can see the disks of the main machine. If you want to enable or disable the settings for accessing devices on the local computer, for example, to transfer files, you can click "Show options" in the main window before connecting and configure it.
3. Securely erase the hard drive
Many people think that by moving a file to the trash and emptying it, the information is deleted. More advanced people believe that formatting is enough. Both assumptions are wrong. Retrieving these files is not difficult.
To eliminate the possibility of data recovery by competitors or law enforcement, you should use special software. We will tell you about the free and convenient ShredOS tool.
Download the ISO image from GitHub and write it to a flash drive (not the one you are erasing). If you are using Windows, you can use Rufus to write the image to a flash drive. After writing the image, boot using the bootable flash drive you just created.
The controls are simple, and the keys that do what are written below.
Let's look at the erasing methods (press "m" to open the list):
- Zero-fill. One erase pass, acceptable security level;
- One-fill. The same, but with ones;
- RCMP TSSIT OPS-II. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Technical Security Standard;
- DoD Short. A more reliable method, uses three passes. US Department of Defense standard;
- DoD 5220.22-M. Very high security level, 7 passes. But you will have to wait a long time;
- Gutmann Wipe. A paranoid option - 35 passes. Nothing will be able to recover the information at all;
Press "Shift+S" to start the process. We recommend using at least DoD Short.
We recommend using this software regularly when you get rid of your PC or just stop using it. This will protect you from various computer forensics specialists.
