Employees of the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region detained a visitor from Penza. He is suspected of fraud committed using Internet technologies.
"It was previously established that the attacker had been engaged in illegal activities since 2022. With the help of special software, he obtained unauthorized access to inactive and abandoned Internet accounts of employees of delivery services. To receive orders for the transportation of goods, the person involved imitated high activity and left positive reviews. As a result, the software algorithm assigned an increased trust rating to his accounts.
The scam artist accepted only those orders that involved the delivery of expensive purchases with cash payment. He brought goods from the store to the buyer, and appropriated the money received. Then he sent fake checks to the merchant about the transfer of funds to its account. As a result, the service department was forced to pay sellers. And the defendant changed his account, phone number, SIM card and continued his criminal business. When the delivery service began to take restrictive measures, he began to look for accomplices. For a fee, they registered new courier accounts in their own name and provided access to them," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
When transferring goods to the buyer, the swindler hid his face with medical masks, scarves and hats. Despite these measures, the police identified him and detained him. During the personal search, 17 SIM cards, three mobile phones, a tablet, a mobile router, as well as cash and goods taken for delivery were seized from the suspect.
"Investigators of the territorial internal affairs bodies in the Kalininsky, Krasnoselsky, Vyborgsky, Nevsky and Admiralteysky districts of St. Petersburg initiated 12 criminal cases on the grounds of crimes under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
In relation to the defendant, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of remand in custody. All episodes of illegal activity are being established," Iryna Volk said.
