The new army unit is designed to strengthen the digital defense of the state.

In early September, Indonesia announced plans to create a fourth branch of the military, which will be engaged in the defense of the country in cyberspace. The initiative was supported by President Joko Widodo, and the commander of the National Armed Forces, General Agus Subianto, confirmed this at a meeting of parliament.

According to the general, the new cyber unit will complement the existing cyber units, which, as he noted, are highly dependent on the qualifications of personnel. He also stressed that the main task is to increase the country's protection from growing threats in the digital world. For the implementation of the project, a structure will be created, including coordination centers in all units of the armed forces.

At the new stage, it is planned to actively involve the civilian population in the service. The main emphasis will be on school and university graduates, who will have the opportunity to become part of Indonesia's future cyber troops.

The strategy to create a new branch of the military is moving forward after the assessments of experts and government representatives, who came to the conclusion that it is necessary to strengthen the country's defense in the face of an escalating cyber war. The authorities expect that this measure will help adapt the country's defense assets to new challenges and strengthen the protection of the economy.

The need to strengthen cybersecurity became especially acute after a major cyberattack that occurred in June 2024, when key infrastructure in Indonesia, including airports and migration services, as well as about 230 government agencies, were affected.

Indonesia also cooperates with the United States in the field of cybersecurity. Earlier, the countries signed a bilateral agreement aimed at increasing Indonesia's cyber capabilities. The partnership provides for programs for the exchange of experience and the development of new tools for protection in cyberspace.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stressed that in cyberspace, even small countries can successfully defend their interests without possessing significant arsenals of weapons.
