We are often asked which plastic card is better to make – glossy or matte? It is impossible to give a clear answer to this question, everything depends solely on personal preferences. Recently, we even conducted a poll among our friends and partners: the votes were divided almost equally. Nevertheless, we weighed the advantages and disadvantages of shiny gloss and discreet matte surface to make it easier for you to choose bonus or discount cards.
1. External features of matte and glossy plastic
Glossy plastic cards attract with their bright, mesmerizing shine. Silver and gold plastic look impressive and stylish under the gloss: their sparkling, metallized structure is additionally emphasized. Bright, juicy, acidic colors also look advantageous under the gloss. The matte surface is a little rough to the touch, such cards are pleasant to hold in your hands. Due to the lack of shine, matte cards look more restrained and, with the right color scheme, very respectable. The matte surface combines with all colors of the light spectrum, but especially with soft pastel tones. The visual softness of such colors is transmitted to the tactile sensations.
2. Resistance to damage
It is worth noting here that glossy cards are susceptible to scratches and when carried in a wallet or cardholder for a long time, they wear out, acquiring a less impressive appearance. But this only happens with active use. Small scratches are visible only in the sun or in direct light. Glossy plastic cards, like any shiny smooth surfaces, are delicate when touched by hands - fingerprints and greasy stains are visible on them.
Matte plastic cards are more durable in this regard. They do not get scratched (they are lost in the texture, so it is difficult to notice them), fingerprints do not remain. In terms of service life, both glossy and matte cards serve the same. It is not the surface that matters here, but the printing method.
3. Scope of use
This point is very conditional. However, practice shows that the heads of respectable companies aimed at interaction with premium clients prefer a modest matte finish to a glamorous shine. At the same time, glossy cards are in great demand among owners of economy-class retail chains.
4. Price
The price does not depend on the selected surface. The cost of manufacturing plastic cards depends on the printing method, the presence/type of personalization and decoration.
5. Possibility of personalization and decoration
Both matte and glossy surfaces can be further decorated in any way possible: spot varnishing, volumetric varnish, foil stamping. Both types of surfaces can be personalized, scratch-strip or signature strip. There are no differences or restrictions in this area.
Over the years, each of our managers has become a bit of a designer at heart. They will definitely help you make a choice! Or we can send you directly to our design specialist!
