Will a data leak change the course of the conflict?
Detailed dossiers on more than 2,000 Israeli military personnel compiled by Hamas as part of intelligence operations have been published online.
Each of the documents contains detailed information about Israeli soldiers and commanders: names, dates of birth, ID numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, information about the soldiers ' appearance, as well as the names of relatives and friends, in some cases — passwords, license plates of cars, credit cards and bank accounts.
Some files reach a volume of more than 200 pages, which indicates the thoroughness and systematic collection of information. The data can potentially be used for blackmail, intimidation, or manipulation.
The leak was analyzed by an international team of researchers led by Paper Trail Media in partnership with Germany's Die Zeit and ZDF, Austria's Der Standard and Israel's Haaretz. Experts found that the data was collected not only for blackmail, but also for planning possible attacks and developing strategies.
According to the study, Hamas has long been collecting data on Israeli military personnel. PDF files began to appear on the Internet from mid-December 2023 on various sites offering information obtained as a result of hacker attacks. One of the hacker groups, Ganosec, claims that it was they who first distributed the materials.
The dossiers are made up of information obtained from leaks or hacks, probably from the servers of "civilian" sites, as well as from social networks, public databases and previous leaks. Document creation is made possible by an automated profiler tool that allows you to collect, collate, and combine intelligence data from open sources (OSINT), creating detailed profiles of intelligence targets.
Data for reports was collected after October 7, but the original information is older. The leaks began no later than December 2023, and some of them are related to the hacking of Atid College by Iranian hackers in May 2023. In the future, the information was probably supplemented with data from other leaks, for example, after the hacking of the insurance company Shirbit in 2020 and data leaks from the voter register through the Elector app.
The Israeli army confirms that it is aware of the collection of data by Hamas, and has been investigating for several months. The army has repeatedly encountered attempts by Hamas to obtain information about the soldiers and has prevented many of them. However, in this case, despite assurances that there is no threat to national security, the leakage of personal data of thousands of military personnel raises serious concerns.
