Several South Korean army officers allegedly used secret military passwords as collateral when taking out a loan to buy cryptocurrencies. This is reported by local media with reference to the Ministry of Defense.
According to the agency, the current officers of the military unit in Chungcheon could not receive money from commercial banks, so they turned to private individuals, giving them information constituting a military secret. The military personnel used the funds received for investments and cryptocurrency trading.
The passwords they handed over were "secret data of the third level" and opened access to barracks and other military facilities.
Counterintelligence believes that the private creditors had no ties to the alleged spy groups and did not attempt to use these passwords to access any of the base's facilities.
The investigating authorities plan to charge a group of officers with violating the Law on the Protection of Military Secrets.
It is known that most of the suspects are from 20 to 30 years old. Other details on the case are not reported. An investigation is underway.
In June 2024, for a similar crime, an unnamed captain received a two-and-a-half-year suspended sentence with a four-year deferral. He was dismissed from the army.
