Fraudsters stole over 30 million rubles from Russians using lotteries.
Fraudsters stole 30.1 million rubles from Russians during November sales using fake lotteries and draws. This was reported to Gazeta.Ru by Maria Sinitsyna, Senior Analyst of Digital Risk Protection at F.A.C.C.T.
"Analysts from F.A.C.C.T. Digital Risk Protection studied the activity of fraudsters during the November sales. Thus, using a scheme with fake lotteries and sweepstakes, participants in one of the affiliate programs aimed at Russian users stole 30,128,518 rubles from November 6 to 17. The fraudsters attracted victims with iPhones, cash prizes in dollars and rubles. In the advertising messages of fake lotteries, the fraudsters promised "sweepstakes" and "prize time" from large retail chains, marketplaces, bloggers and trash streamers," the expert explained.
Sinitsyna explained the gist of the scheme. After clicking on the link, the victim is taken to a page where they are offered to open boxes with prizes. Usually the first two attempts are unsuccessful, and on the third attempt a large win is received. To receive the money, the victim is asked to enter the details of the card to which the winnings can be credited and pay a "commission" according to the details. As a result, the victim will not receive the winnings and will lose all the money transferred. The bank card details will be compromised, the expert concluded.
According to the Central Bank, in 2023, cyber fraudsters stole 15.8 billion rubles from Russians, making 1.17 million successful transactions without the consent of clients, which is 33% more than in 2022. In the first quarter of 2024, fraudsters stole 4.3 billion rubles, which is 6.3% less than the same period last year.
