Will extortionists ask for a bottled ransom?

The brewing company Duvel Moortgat faced an attack of a ransomware program, which led to a halt in beer production at factories. The famous Belgian brand Duvel, whose signature product is Pale Ale, as well as other popular Abbey beers.

As the company's representative told local media, IDS systems detected the attack on the night of March 5. Production was immediately halted, and it is not yet known when it will be able to resume. The company expressed hope for an early restart of production, possibly today or tomorrow.

However, even though there are no exact deadlines for restoring normal operation of production operations, the company assured that this will not affect the distribution of products due to the presence of a sufficient amount of beer in warehouses.

Beer fans on Reddit reacted with humor to the incident, calling it a "national disaster" and asking about the availability of "strategic reserves". However, some have expressed concern and annoyance over the potential price increases for certain Duvel beers if production takes a long time to recover.

So far, none of the ransomware groups has claimed responsibility for the Duvel attack. It is also unclear whether the cyberattack only affected Duvel's main factory in Breendock, Belgium, or other production facilities in Antwerp, Oudenaard and Aschuff.

It is also unknown whether the attack affected the company's confidential data. Although ransomware programs are often designed to steal data for subsequent extortion, the main consequence for the Duvel situation was the suspension of production operations.
