Hospitals and medical applications faced a large-scale attack.
Kuwait's Ministry of Health is rebuilding its systems after a cyberattack that affected several hospitals and the Sahel mobile app, which is used to provide medical services. At the moment, the official website of the Ministry of Health remains inaccessible, but the department published a statement through the Kuwait News Agency.
The systems that manage the National Center for Cancer Control, as well as the departments responsible for national health insurance and checks for foreign nationals, have been restored using backups. Despite the difficulties, the authorities assured that all necessary measures were taken to ensure the continuity of basic and vital health services in primary care centers and public hospitals.
The investigation revealed how the attackers managed to infiltrate the systems, but the ministry stressed that it had taken all necessary measures to prevent the threat from spreading to other systems. As a result of the cyberattack, the most important databases were not affected, but the department had to turn off some of its systems to install updates and strengthen security.
At the moment, the exact date for the full restoration of all systems has not been provided, but the ministry assures that this will happen in the near future. So far, none of the ransomware groups have claimed responsibility for the attack.
It is worth noting that exactly a year ago, the Ministry of Finance of Kuwait was also attacked by the Rhysida hacker group. A year earlier, several IKEA stores in Kuwait were targeted by a group called Vice Society, which is believed to be linked to Rhysida.
A record number of countries, more than 117, have been attacked by ransomware groups in 2023, according to a new report from a major cybersecurity consortium. In total, about 6,670 incidents were recorded, which is a 73% increase compared to the previous year.
