The group claimed responsibility for the attack, which disrupted semiconductor production.

American semiconductor supplier Microchip Technology reported the theft of employee data after a cyberattack that occurred in August 2024. The hacker group Play, known for its ransomware attacks, claimed responsibility for the incident.

Microchip Technology serves approximately 123,000 customers from a variety of industries, including the industrial, automotive, consumer sectors, as well as aerospace and defense, telecommunications, and computing.

The attack was discovered on August 17, and on August 20, the company officially announced the consequences. As a result of the incident, the operation of several production facilities was affected, which affected the company's ability to fulfill orders. To prevent the threat from spreading further, Microchip Technology was forced to shut down some of its systems and isolate the areas affected by the attack.

Despite the serious consequences, by the beginning of September, most of the IT systems necessary for work were restored. Microchip Technology has been processing orders and shipping products to its customers for more than a week. This became known from the company's statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

In an ongoing investigation, Microchip Technology found that cybercriminals gained access to some employee information, including contact details and encrypted passwords. So far, the company has found no signs of a customer data breach. Microchip Technology is continuing its investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity and forensic experts.
