Contact smart cards with ISO 7816 interface

A contact card is a type of smart card with a contact pad and interface that allows the card and reader to interact when voltage is applied to the contacts of the chip. Chip contacts are several small contact tabs on the contact pad. When the card is inserted into the reader, the chip contacts the electrical connectors, which allows reading and / or writing information from the chip.

ISO / IEC 7816 and ISO / IEC 7810 standards regulate the shape of the card, contacts, their location and purpose. In addition, the ISO / IEC 7816 standard regulates exchange protocols and some aspects of working with data that are used for other smart cards.

Contact cards do not have built-in power sources - batteries, energy is supplied from the side of the reader.

The most popular contact smart cards are cellular SIM cards, payphone cards, and modern bank cards.

There are also contact smart cards with a USB interface. These cards are equipped with a conventional ISO 7816 microchip card combined with a USB reader in one miniature body.

An example is Rutoken and eToken products.
