Three criminals were arrested in Texas for using a Raspberry Pi to bypass ATM security systems and steal money. The criminals managed to steal about $5 thousand from several ATMs in the west of the state.

The men were detained on August 3 after law enforcement agencies became aware of break-ins and thefts. All three were arrested in a hotel room that also contained two Raspberry Pis.

Court records indicate that the attackers used single-board computers to disable security systems and gain access to money. Unfortunately, the source of the message does not have details about how exactly the scammers interfered with the ATM operation and how the security of the systems was compromised.

The three men were charged with unlawful interception, use or disclosure of wire, oral or electronic communications and engaging in criminal activity. One of the detainees was also accused of forging documents.

In 2019, the US Office of Inspector General reported that a year earlier, attackers used a Raspberry Pi to hack NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory systems. The criminals intercepted 23 files with a total volume of up to 500 MB. The stolen information was related to missions on Mars.
