The new bill is based on the principles of the American Magnitsky Act.
The Australian Senate unanimously passed a bill to directly impose sanctions against cybercriminals. The bill, if enacted, would allow the Australian government to directly impose sanctions on individuals or entities, barring them from visiting Australia or making any investments in the country.
As reported by The Australian, the new bill is based on the principles of the US Magnitsky Act, but Australian lawmakers have expanded it with the ability to impose sanctions against "persons engaged in malicious cyber activities that affect the interests of Australia."
“The bill will enable the authorities to respond in a timely manner to issues of international concern, regardless of where they arise. By cutting off access to our country and our economy for the perpetrators and beneficiaries of such crimes, <...> we ensure that they will not be able to use the freedoms that our democracy provides, and that Australia will not become a haven for such people and organizations, ”said the head Australian Foreign Office Marise Ann Payne.
The Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law and Accountability Act was passed in the United States in 2012. It provides for the use of unilateral sanctions against Russian officials, who, from the point of view of Washington, are guilty of human rights violations at home. In 2016, the United States adopted the Magnitsky Global Human Rights Act, which provides for the possibility of extending the Magnitsky Act to other countries, not just Russia.
