ATM attacks that use special malware and jackpotting techniques no longer generate normal income for cybercriminals. In the first half of 2019, ATM gangs raised less than € 1,000 per successful campaign.

In total, banks across Europe have reported 35 incidents involving ATM malware and jackpotting techniques. Jackpotting involves a type of attack on an ATM, as a result of which an attacker forces the device to literally "spit out" bills.

The study of such incidents in the first half of this year was carried out by the non-profit organization European Association for Secure Transactions (EAST).

“Malicious programs were used in every third attack. In other cases, the criminals resorted to jackpotting, ”reads the EAST report (PDF). “These operations were marked by small losses of credit institutions. In one case, the attackers managed to steal less than € 1,000. The average amount of losses has also dropped significantly - by about 100%. "

Thus, for the second year in a row, criminal groups have been unable to steal really large amounts of money using special malware tailored for attacks on ATMs.
