A recent study by Juniper Research predicts that only 3% of mobile NFC users will be served by mobile carriers in North America by 2025.

Based on the latest market developments, Juniper analysts predict that mobile operators will reassess their NFC commitments and may largely exit the market. As many mobile and cellular operators try to find their niche in mobile payments, they face serious competition from financial institutions and technology companies like Apple, and may eventually cede their share to them. “In the US, we believe that only 3% of users will use mobile NFC payments from mobile operators,” said study author and Juniper Research analyst Dr Windsor Holden.

ISIS, the largest player in the NFC payments market today, recently renamed Softcard by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA, is going through a difficult time. Juniper predicts that the market share of NFC elements controlled by mobile operators will fall below 50% by 2025.

Analysts also predict that NFC payments will grow very rapidly soon, driven by the emergence of Apple Pay and Google's HCE technologies. It is estimated that by 2025 there will be 500 million users of NFC payments in the world, which is almost 5 times more than in 2021 (101 million).
