Windows will get a built-in ambulance.
Microsoft is launching a new Windows Resiliency Initiative to improve the security and reliability of the Windows operating system. The decision comes after a massive outage in July, when 8.5 million Windows computers and servers were affected by CrowdStrike software issues.
As part of the initiative, the company is developing the Quick Machine Recovery feature, which will allow system administrators to remotely restore computers even if they cannot be booted. The feature will be implemented through the improved Windows Recovery Environment.
Microsoft is also tightening requirements for antivirus software vendors that are part of the Microsoft Virus Initiative. They will now need to conduct more thorough testing of their products and ensure a secure, phased rollout of updates with the ability to monitor and restore systems.
The company is working on bringing antivirus processing beyond the kernel of the system. A preview of the new framework will be available to Windows security partners in July 2025.
Windows 11 will have a new admin protection feature. It will allow users to temporarily gain administrative privileges to perform specific tasks after authenticating through Windows Hello. After the task is completed, the rights will be automatically revoked.
Also, to further improve the security of the operating system, Microsoft is gradually transferring some of the functionality from the C++ programming language to Rust, which is considered safer in terms of working with memory.
