Steelers stole 51 pairs of credentials from each infected computer.
The number of cases of malware infection for stealing personal data and accounts has increased by 643% since 2020. In 2023, about 10 million such incidents were recorded worldwide, Vedomosti writes, citing data from Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence.
The most common malware for stealing information last year was the RedLine styler, which accounted for more than 55% of all hacks. Steeplers are malicious programs designed to steal data about the victim's device, as well as usernames, passwords, and other confidential information.
The study analyzed only cases of infection of computers running on Windows, mobile devices were not taken into account. Experts note that most of the compromised devices are running this OS, but this is not due to security issues, but to the general popularity of this OS in both the home and corporate segments.
On average, about 51 pairs of usernames and passwords are stolen from one infected computer. These credentials can include access to social media, online banking, cryptocurrency wallets, and corporate services like email.
Over the past 5 years, accounts have been compromised on 443,000 websites worldwide. The attackers then use the stolen information for cyber attacks, selling or distributing it on shadow forums and Telegram channels.
In terms of the number of compromised accounts, the .com domain is leading - in 2023, infostealers stole almost 326 million usernames and passwords for sites in this domain zone. This is followed by the domain zone of Brazil (.br), where 28.9 million accounts were compromised, India (.in) – 8.2 million, Colombia (.co) – 6 million and Vietnam (.vn) – 5.5 million.
The .ru domain ranked 21st in terms of the number of hacked accounts in 2023: 2.5 million accounts were stolen on sites in the national domain zone. The number of compromised accounts for sites on domains .org (for example, Telegram is located in this zone) and .net in 2023 amounted to 11 million and 20 million, respectively.
Estimates of the scale of hacking vary. According to F. A. C. C. T. Threat Intelligence, about 700,000 accounts were compromised in Russia. Solar Group believes that the Russian segment accounts for more than 5% of the total number of hacked devices. But it is difficult to estimate exactly how many of the total number of hacked accounts are in Russia, since often users from Russia indicate data from other countries, experts say.
"We do not rule out that some credentials compromised in 2023 will end up in the shadow segment only in 2024.Therefore, the real number of infections, according to our estimates, may reach 16 million, "says Kaspersky Lab's cybersecurity expert.
