When we shop online and enter the three-digit code from the back of the card, we want to ask: why is it called so cumbersomely - CVC/CVV? And sometimes they ask to enter CVC2/CVV2. Is it the same or different? Why is the card number printed in "normal" digits, and this one - small and in most cases on the back of the card? We have found the answers for you.

What is CVC and CVV

CVC and CVV security codes are the verification code of a bank card, which is written on the magnetic strip of the card and serves to verify the authenticity of the plastic card when paying through terminals. The code is read by terminals automatically. The card owner does not know this code and does not need to enter it anywhere.

Sometimes CVC and CVV refer to security codes for online purchases, printed on the surface of the card (their correct designation is CVC2 and CVV2). This code must be entered in addition to the card number and expiration date when performing transactions without reading the card in the terminal.

What is the difference between CVC and CVV

It's all about belonging to a certain payment system and their security protocols.
CVC (Card Verification Code) is a security code in Mastercard cards.
CVV (Card Verification Value) is a security code in Visa cards.

For bank cards of the Mir payment system, the three-digit security code is called CVP (Card Verification Parameter) or PPK (Card Verification Parameter), and for cards of the Union Pay payment system, it is called CVN (Card Verification Number).

All of these security codes have the same purpose - to confirm that you have the card in your hands. The names for cards of different payment systems may differ, but in most cases these codes are referred to as CVC2/CVV2 or CVC/CVV.

What is CVC2/CVV2

A four-digit PIN code is used to confirm the identity of the cardholder at ATMs and offline stores. No one except the cardholder knows it, not even the bank that issued the card. For online purchases, as well as mail and phone orders, this function is performed by CVC2/CVV2, printed on the back of the card. The cardholder enters this code along with the rest of the details.

CVC2 or CVV2 cannot be selected or replaced: the security code is printed on the card when it is issued, and you will only receive a new code when you replace the plastic carrier along with the card number.

CVC/CVV was invented to reduce the risk of fraud. This code is prohibited to be saved, its verification occurs each time by calculating the value by the card issuer. Thus, if someone knows your bank card number, it will not be enough to make purchases - in most cases, they will also need the card expiration date and CVC/CVV, which should only be known to the card owner.

Usually the visible three-digit code on the back of a plastic card is called CVC/CVV, omitting the number 2. Formally, this is incorrect. But it is simpler and everyone is already accustomed to the fact that we are talking about numbers on the card, and not a code hidden in the magnetic strip. If the card does not have a three-digit code, then it is not intended for use on the Internet.

Where are CVC2 and CVV2 located?

The card number, owner's name and expiration date are located on the front side. And the CVC2 or CVV2 code is usually located below the magnetic strip on the back of the card (on the signature strip). This makes it more difficult for criminals to get hold of all the card data at once. For example, a camera installed above the store's cash register will only be able to see one side.

The CVC2 and CVV2 codes are specially printed in thin black font - the numbers are clearly visible up close, but difficult to read from a distance. You can't feel the numbers with your fingers either.

Sometimes the last digits of the plastic card number are placed next to the three-digit code. This can be found on cards of the Mir payment system. The last digits of the card number will be duplicated on the left, and after a space - the three-digit code, for example: 4783 567, where 567 is the security code.

How to find out CVC2/CVV2 for a virtual card

A virtual card is a payment instrument for online payments; it is not issued as a plastic carrier. Accordingly, it is impossible to read the code on the card. However, this data is still required when paying and entering details. What to do in this situation?

The bank provides access to this data in the personal account of the Internet bank user or in the mobile application. Do not forget your password, otherwise you will have to go through the recovery procedure to enter your personal account or application and find out the CVC2/CVV2 for the virtual card.

When you can and cannot indicate CVC/CVV

Don't tell or forward the code to anyone. Even if they call "from the bank" and ask for the code. Bank managers will never ask for it. If such a request is received, these are scammers.

Enter the code only in payment forms on sites you trust. Do not indicate it in various questionnaires, surveys and similar documents. The code numbers are only needed when you pay. If the money is transferred to you, then the card number is enough.

The security code will also be required to "link" the card in applications. Be vigilant and always study in detail the terms you agree to when providing your card details and CVC/CVV to "link" it. In this way, you formalize obligations and confirm your agreement that funds will be debited from your card in the future depending on your actions within the rules of the connected service.

For online shopping, get a virtual card. Keep a large sum of money on your main debit card, and transfer only a certain amount to the virtual card to pay for goods or services.

What other codes are on the cards?

There are also CVC3/CVV3 codes that are generated in the bank card chip and can change. These codes are necessary for making contactless payments. They do not need to be entered anywhere, so cardholders do not know these numbers.

In addition, the chip card stores a magnetic strip image with iCVV/ChipCVC values. This is done to prevent the production of a counterfeit magnetic strip card by intercepting the chip transaction data.
