Elon Musk and Pavel Durov forced hundreds of millions of users to question the security of Signal.

In social networks, an unexpected fight broke out between the world's leading messengers, causing concern to hundreds of millions of users.

Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, responded to Telegram's claims about the possibility of hacking into Signal's secure messages, saying that "Telegram is known for its insecurity and secret cooperation with governments, despite loud statements about protecting privacy." She also questioned Telegram's own encryption.

The controversy began after Elon Musk posted a tweet about the discovered Signal vulnerabilities, "which are not fixed", which was a response to an article in the City Journal about the connections of Signal management with the US government. The article raised questions about the initial funding of Signal and its possible connection with the US intelligence services.

The messages also mention that the Signal encryption protocol is used in such popular platforms as WhatsApp, Facebook* Messenger and Google Messages, which calls into question the security of messages if vulnerabilities are found in the Signal protocol.

Twitter (X) founder Jack Dorsey and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin also joined the discussion, sharing their views on the situation.

In response, Meredith Whittaker emphasized that Signal adheres to the principles of responsible disclosure of information, but at the moment there is no evidence of existing vulnerabilities, and their presence has not been reported. In addition, Whittaker noted that Signal is built in such a way that it is impossible to interfere with its work without consequences.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov did not miss the opportunity to criticize the competitor, saying that Signal leaders are used by the US State Department to change regimes abroad and that major US technology companies cannot create their encryption protocols without government intervention.

Signal continues to insist on its reliability, pointing out its openness and willingness to be tested by the community. While Telegram, despite its popularity, offers encrypted chats, which are not enabled by default and only work in one-on-one mode.
