The AI tool promoted by Microsoft will be forcibly removed from government computers.

In the US Congress, a strict ban was introduced on the use of Microsoft's Copilot artificial intelligence assistant by government employees due to security concerns. Thus, Copilot joins ChatGPT in the list of banned and restricted AI tools of the House of Representatives.

According to the publication Axios, the head of the administrative office of the House of Representatives, Catherine Spindor, in her instructions to the congressmen's offices, noted that Copilot is now "not allowed to be used in the House" and will be removed and blocked on all Windows devices controlled by the House.

Spindor said that U.S. cybersecurity experts consider Copilot a threat because of the risk of the Chamber's data being leaked to cloud services not approved by Congress.

In response to these concerns, Microsoft has announced plans to release a suite of tools targeted at government agencies that the company claims will meet all federal government security requirements. The company hopes these tools will allay Congressional concerns.

In the context of the growing focus on generative AI, many large companies and organizations, including Amazon, Apple, Samsung, Verizon and others, have already imposed restrictions or even a complete ban on the use of ChatGPT among their employees.

Employees of the House of Representatives were previously restricted from using the paid version of ChatGPT, and the use of the free version was banned altogether. Copilot only added to the already clogged "piggy bank of prohibitions" of the department.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is actively, if not aggressively, promoting its Copilot to the masses, installing it in the latest editions of Windows, as well as releasing Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with dedicated Copilot buttons.

However, according to user complaints, Copilot is not as good as ChatGPT, despite the fact that it is built on the same GPT-4 language model. Microsoft believes that the problem lies in the incorrect use of Copilot by users or in a lack of understanding of the differences between the two products.
