Who is trying to change the course of the election campaign and why?
Unknown people hacked into the internal communications of the campaign headquarters of Donald Trump. This information became public after journalists of the publication Politico received anonymous emails with internal files of the organization. Among the stolen information was a 271-page dossier on Senator James David Vance, a candidate for the role of vice president. Although the full contents of the file have not yet been made public, several sources familiar with the document have confirmed its authenticity.
Campaign spokesman Stephen Chung bluntly stated that the documents were "illegally obtained by foreign entities hostile to the United States" in order to interfere in the 2024 election.
Experts note the key differences between the current attack and the hacking of Hillary Clinton's email in 2016. According to them, if eight years ago Russian groups were behind the cyber attacks, now, most likely, the traces lead to Iranian cybercriminals.
According to an August 9 Microsoft threat intelligence report, a group called Mint Sandstorm, run by the intelligence arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, sent a phishing email to an official involved in the presidential campaign in June 2024. The email was sent from a hacked account of a former senior adviser.
The incident is reminiscent of another hacking incident during the 2020 Trump campaign. Then the cybercriminal group REvil claimed to have stolen incriminating emails from a New York law firm, and demanded a ransom of $ 42 million for non-disclosure of information. Still, the scale of the problem was not so serious then. The leak contained only references to the surname "Trump" in various contexts.
At the moment, it is not known whether the hackers made any demands on the Trump 2024 headquarters. The team has so far refrained from additional comments, except for the already voiced statements about attempts to interfere in the elections.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the representatives declare their determination to continue the election campaign, without succumbing to provocations and attempts at destabilization. They also call on American voters to be critical of any information that appears online.
