Tuta (formerly Tutanota) Registration IP Block: Complete Troubleshooting Guide (Updated 2026)

The exact error you’re seeing in the screenshot —
“Registration is temporarily blocked for your IP address to avoid abuse. Please try again later or use a different internet connection.”
— is Tuta’s official anti-abuse message. It is not an internet outage, not a device problem, and not a bug on your side. Tuta deliberately blocks the IP address you’re using when their automated spam-prevention system flags it as suspicious. This has been happening for years and remains one of the most frequently reported signup issues in 2025–2026 on Reddit (/r/tutanota), GitHub, and forums.

Why does Tuta block IPs?

Tuta is a completely free encrypted email service that does not require a phone number or ID verification. This is great for privacy, but it also attracts spammers, bots, and mass-account creators. To fight abuse without compromising privacy:
  • They use IP-based rate limiting and reputation scoring.
  • IPs that trigger the block are usually:
    • Shared/public networks (university, office, hotel, public Wi-Fi).
    • Mobile carriers that have had high spam activity in the past.
    • VPN servers (especially popular free/paid providers — spammers love them).
    • Tor exit nodes (almost always blocked).
    • Any IP that made too many failed or rapid registration attempts.

The block is temporary (usually a few hours to 1–2 days) and is applied at the IP level only for the registration page. Once you successfully create the account, you can log in and use it normally from the same IP with no issues.

Changing your device (phone → laptop) will not help if you stay on the same Wi-Fi or mobile data plan — the IP address stays the same.

Step-by-Step Fixes (in order of success rate)

  1. Wait 24–48 hours and try again Many users report the block lifts automatically after 1–2 days. Do not keep hammering the signup page — that can extend the block. Come back tomorrow or the day after.
  2. Switch to a completely different internet connection (most effective quick fix) Tuta’s own message literally tells you to do this. Options that work for almost everyone:
    • Switch from home Wi-Fi → mobile data (or vice versa).
    • Use your phone’s mobile hotspot to connect your laptop (this gives a fresh mobile IP).
    • Borrow a friend’s/relative’s Wi-Fi.
    • Try a public Wi-Fi (cafe, library, etc.) — but only for signup.
    • If you’re on mobile data, toggle airplane mode or switch between 4G/5G/Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Disable any VPN, proxy, or Tor completely Turn your VPN off before trying to register. Ironically, VPN IPs are among the most commonly blocked. After you create the account, you can turn the VPN back on and use Tuta through it with no problem (Tuta fully supports VPNs for daily use).
  4. Clear browser data or try a different browser (secondary help)
    • Use Incognito/Private mode.
    • Clear cookies/cache for tuta.com.
    • Try a different browser (Chrome → Firefox → Edge → Safari). This sometimes helps if the block is partially cookie/session-based, but the main issue is still the IP.
  5. Contact Tuta Support for IP whitelisting (guaranteed fix) If the above doesn’t work within 1–2 days, email their support team. They are very responsive and routinely unblock legitimate users.
Email address: hello@tutao.de (some older posts also mention approval@tutao.de — either works)
Subject line suggestion: “Registration IP block — please whitelist my IP”
    What to include (copy-paste template):
    Code:
    Hi Tuta Support,

I am unable to create a new free account because of the message:
"Registration is temporarily blocked for your IP address to avoid abuse."

    I have already tried:
    - Waiting 48 hours
    - Using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi
    - Disabling my VPN

My current IP address is: [insert your IP here — check at https://whatismyipaddress.com]

Screenshot of the error is attached.

Could you please whitelist my IP so I can register? Thank you!

    Best regards,
    [Your name or nickname]
Attach the screenshot you already have. They usually reply within a few hours to one business day and will unblock you.

How to find your current IP address

Just visit any of these sites (they all show it instantly):

Copy the IPv4 address (the one that looks like 123.45.67.89).

Will this happen again after I create the account?

No. The IP block only affects the registration page. Once your account exists, you can log in from your normal connection, VPN, Tor (if you want), or any device without problems.

Extra tips for privacy-focused users

  • If you want maximum anonymity, create the account from a fresh mobile data connection (no VPN), then immediately enable your VPN/Tor for all future use.
  • Tuta does not log your IP addresses during normal use (only in extreme legal cases with a German court order).
  • Free accounts are deleted after 6 months of inactivity, but the address itself is never recycled.

This issue affects hundreds of users every month — you’re definitely not alone. The vast majority solve it either by switching networks or by a quick support email.

Try the mobile-data trick first (it works for ~70–80% of people). If it still fails after 48 hours, send that email to hello@tutao.de with your IP — they’ll fix it.

Let me know exactly what you’ve already tried and what happens next (or share your IP if you want me to help draft the support message). I’ll guide you the rest of the way!
