The US suspects TP-Link of collaborating with Chinese intelligence agencies.

Two members of Congress called on the US Department of Commerce to investigate cybersecurity risks associated with the Wi-Fi routers of the Chinese company TP-Link Technologies, and also asked for an investigation into the company.

China's TP-Link is the world's largest provider of Wi-Fi products, selling more than 160 million devices annually in more than 170 countries. TP-Link Technologies and its partners also hold a leading position in the US Wi-Fi router market. However, since TP-Link routers are manufactured in China using Chinese technology, there is a concern that it is easier for Chinese government hackers to break into the devices and gain access to American systems.

An additional concern is that TP-Link is required by Chinese law to disclose confidential US information at the request of Chinese intelligence agencies. The situation is aggravated by the fact that in 2023, Chinese hackers used TP-Link routers as part of a campaign against politicians in European countries.

In their letter, the lawmakers emphasize that the high degree of vulnerability of TP-Link routers, combined with mandatory compliance with Chinese laws, poses a serious threat. Especially since the Chinese government often uses TP-Link routers designed for the SOHO network as a tool for conducting large-scale cyber attacks in the United States.

Congressmen insist that it is urgent to assess and minimize the threat associated with TP-Link devices. Lawmakers asked Minister Raimondo to provide an assessment of the threat and a plan to eliminate it by August 30.
