Four Romanians have been charged of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit access device fraud, aggravated identity theft and bank fraud in the Manhattan federal court on Monday
Mihail Draghici, Ionel Dedulescu, Didi Theodor Ciulei and Laurentiu Mugurel Manta have allegedly conspired to defraud bank customers by setting up skimming devices and replacing PIN pads with recording ones or with ATM PIN pad overlays on a number of ATMs across the US.
The devices would sent the recorded information to the crooks or they would access it remotely, which allowed them to create fake credit cards with the right information in order to withdraw money from the victims' bank account.
The gang operated between March 2010 and May 2011, and they managed to get their hands on over $1,5 millions in total.
First to fall into the hands of the Secret Service were Draghici and Dedulescu, when they tried to leave the country by plane from the Miami International Airport on December 2, 2010. Ciulei and Manta were arrested on May 29, 2011, in Chicago.
"All four are charged in the Superseding Indictment returned today with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft," says in the press release by the United States Attorney's office, Southern District of New York. "Draghici and Dedulescu are additionally charged with bank fraud. If convicted of these charges, they each face a maximum sentence of 69 and one-half years in prison, and Ciulei and Manta each face a maximum sentence of 62 years in prison."
