Color plays a key role in design and is often overlooked. When it comes to developing the design of a plastic card, it is necessary to focus on the color of the plastic. It is worth considering the peculiarities of the eyesight of a person who is able to distinguish the finest shades of color. Often a person is not aware of this, looking at some image. At a deep level, there is a detailed assessment, which translates into the final opinion “like it or not like it”. With the help of color as a key factor, it is possible to influence the perception of a person. Competent work with this tool distinguishes a good designer from a mediocre one. A well-chosen color scheme accentuates the main idea, emphasizes key messages, makes individual parts of the composition expressive, and evokes certain emotions.

The worst scenario is a situation when the finished product of design efforts does not evoke any emotions or feelings in the observer, neither negative nor positive. This indicates that the designer completed his work with a critical number of mistakes. Let's try to understand in detail the nuances of working with color, evaluate how to correctly apply the color gamut in practice, when creating a layout of a plastic card, for its further printing.

How does color affect perception?
How color affects perception can be easily seen in the portfolio section. Here are many examples of plastic cards that were intended for supermarkets, a variety of stores, fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants, drugstore chains, spas and gyms. Each specific design of the card was developed based on the purpose for which it will serve. The client who received the plastic card had to clearly formulate its purpose. This allowed building the final product concept in front of the designer. For example, for a network of pharmacies, a soft color scheme was selected, which the cardholder associates with environmental friendliness, tranquility, and nature. This was achieved using different shades of green. Most people associate it with nature. This is the color of grass, foliage coming to life, the development of nature.

It should be borne in mind that there are two types of color construction. The first type, for example, emits a laptop screen (the screen is lit), the second type is a printed product where the color is reflected rather than emitted. In the absence of a light source, in the dark, the picture is not visible, since nothing is reflected. The emitted color is a mixture of red, green and blue. The reflected color has four components: yellow, black, magenta, and blue. The first type is also called RGB, the second is CMYK.

All the variety of printed materials presented to us is a consequence of the manifestation of the CMYK model. On the monitor, layouts of plastic cards are presented in the RGB color model. There is nothing critical that the color models do not differ.

If the task is to create a defiant, contrasting, bright design, it is necessary to select colors from different poles of the color wheel. If, on the contrary, the designer is tasked with creating the most soft, pacifying design, it is necessary to choose colors located in a circle as close to each other as possible. There are time-tested color combinations that can be adopted to achieve the predicted effect. To an unprepared person, these combinations may seem inappropriate. For example, a dyad, triad, or quadriad.

A dyad is a combination of two opposite colors. Triad means a combination of two close colors with one opposite. Two related colors, combined with two opposite ones, represent a quadriad.
