New York gives green light to autonomous law enforcement officers.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) are considering using Knightscope robots as a security and crime prevention solution.

The New York City Mayor's Office has announced the launch of a pilot program for Knightscope K5 security robots after two weeks of training. After that, autonomous robots will perform patrol duties at Manhattan subway stations from midnight to 6: 00 in the morning. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said:: "When people feel unsafe on our trains and buses, it also affects our economic stability. We use existing technology, cameras that can communicate with people, and place them on wheels, ensuring that they are used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if necessary."

In its press release, Knightscope highlighted the NYPD's statistics, which showed a 45% increase in shoplifting. It is noted that their robotic platform is already used by other police departments in the country, including Los Angeles. Knightscope stated: "Imagine an urban robotic platform designed to identify recurring shoplifters and alert stores when they enter. A system that can discretely monitor customers ' hand movements, instantly notifying security guards of suspicious movements typical of thieves."

Mayor Adams highlighted the potential economic benefits to the city if successful, saying that operating the robot would cost less than the minimum wage. It was also stated that in the event of damage to the K5 robot, Knightscope will bear the costs. Adams added ," We don't use facial recognition technology. We don't allow them to own the videos. This robot is undergoing a two-month performance test, and depending on our findings, we will decide how we will use it in the future."
