Employees of the Regional Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Voronezh Region, in cooperation with colleagues from the regional Departments of the FSB of Russia, detained members of an organized group. It consisted of young people aged 17 to 21 living in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions. They are suspected of assisting telephone fraudsters who conducted illegal activities outside the Russian Federation.
"It was previously established that the criminal scheme has been functioning since the beginning of this year. The attackers, acting on the instructions of anonymous curators, ensured the operation of special equipment that made it possible to replace the numbers of foreign subscribers with Russian ones. Scammers presented themselves as employees of financial institutions and law enforcement agencies, relatives who were involved in an accident, and then convinced citizens to transfer their savings to them. SIM boxes and GSM gateways were used for illegal activities.
Searches were conducted at the places of residence of suspects and in office premises in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions. Server equipment, communications equipment, laptops and other items of evidentiary value were found and seized," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
The damage caused to Russians exceeded 10 million rubles.
The investigator of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the Voronezh Region initiated criminal cases on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. A preventive measure in the form of remand in custody has been chosen for two defendants, and one is under house arrest. Seven people were subjected to a measure of procedural compulsion in the form of an obligation to appear.
"Currently, measures are being taken to establish all episodes and accomplices of illegal activities," Irina Volk added.
