Officers of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, as a result of a set of operational-search measures, documented and stopped the illegal activities of two local residents aged 19 and 20, suspected of a series of frauds committed using IT technologies.
As the police established, young people purchased inactive physical SIM cards in the shadow segment of the Internet, which were previously used by someone, and then, with the help of a hacker program, found out which of these subscriber numbers were used to register accounts on the State Services portal.
Next, the attackers hacked into other people's accounts, restoring access to them through authorization via SMS messages, after which they received the full personal data of their owners.
In the future, the accomplices ordered various goods on the website of one of the marketplaces, placing orders in installments on behalf of citizens, information about whom they received by criminal means. The accomplices resold the property acquired illegally, and divided the money among themselves. Also, according to preliminary data, the accomplices through the Internet issued loans to people in micro-finance organizations and spent other people's loans for personal needs.
Currently, the involvement of young people in the commission of ten such frauds has been established, and the total amount of damage caused to citizens amounted to about half a million rubles.
The police conducted searches at the places of residence of the suspects, seized computer equipment, many bank and SIM cards. In addition, in the apartment of one of the swindlers, detectives found and seized similar to narcotic substances. A study has been scheduled, the results of which will be decided in accordance with the law.
For each episode of an IT crime, investigators of the Investigative Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Kalininsky District of St. Petersburg initiated criminal cases under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. At the time of their investigation, both defendants were chosen a preventive measure in the form of house arrest.
