Krebs has already described this story in detail. In the Russian-speaking cybercrime world, Brian is fiercely hated for his investigations and doxing of community members. In 2013, one of the haters under the nickname Fly started sending Krebs mocking tweets and links to malicious pages, probably trying to plant a Trojan on his computer. In his LiveJournal blog, Mucha also launched an active campaign, publishing copies of credit reports, Krebs ' home address, a map of the area with his house, photos of the front door and other confidential details about the journalist.
Brian Krebs was not idle. He conducted his own investigation and thanks to the specialists of the Russian company Group-IB, he learned that Mukha is the administrator of the closed Russian-language forum thecc.bz on carding (the forum is currently closed).
Having secretly infiltrated the forum, Brian found a large discussion thread where Mucha asked his colleagues to dump bitcoins to buy heroin for Krebs. According to the plan, the carders were going to buy "gerych" in the Silk Road store — now closed) and send it to the journalist's home address. Immediately after that, the plan was to call the police, who were supposed to find a package of drugs in Brian Krebs-and arrest him for possession or distribution of drugs (in general, for something).
Forumchane carefully studied the range of heroin sellers in Silk Road and chose the most reliable seller with a good reputation.
The plan was partially successful. The carders really collected the necessary amount, then Mucha called the local police station and said that his "neighbor" is a drag dealer, drug addicts go to him every day, and drugs even come to him by mail.
But only Brian had previously gone to the police and told them that Mukha and his Ukrainian friends were plotting against him, so soon they would send him a package in the mail and call the police. As expected, the product soon arrived in the form of a glossy magazine with glued bags on the cover of the magazine with advertising. Brian immediately called the police, and the officers found that the bags contained almost pure heroin.
Mucha was not satisfied with this, and soon sent a funeral decoration in the form of a cross with a funeral card to the door of Brian Krebs.
It was probably bought with someone else's credit card.
After this story, Brian Krebs became extremely interested in the personality of the Fly. The guys from Group-IB helped him by finding out the mailing address mazafaka@libero.it, which Fly highlighted on one of the sites. In 2013, this mailbox was hacked by someone, they found there a bunch of logs from keyloggers and binding to another email address 777flyck777@gmail.com. Of course, all the addresses were anonymous, but it turned out that Mukha installed a keylogger, including on the computer of his fiancee Irina Gumenyuk. Soon Irina changed her last name to Vovnenko on social networks — and so Brian Krebs found out the identity of the hacker who terrorized him. It turned out to be 28-year-old Sergey Vovnenko, who lived with his wife and young son in the Italian city of Naples.
Brian Krebs passed all the collected information about the attacker to law enforcement agencies, and soon Italian special forces visited the apartment of the Ukrainian family.
For about 15 months, Mucha was awaiting extradition to Poggioreale Jail, which is described as the worst prison in Italy. There, he repented and even sent Brian greeting cards for the New Year.
In the end, Vovnenko was eventually extradited to the United States, and on February 16, 2017, a New Jersey judge sentenced him to 41 months in prison( about the same amount he had already served), three years of supervised release, and damages of $83,368.
The punishment for Vovnenko is not related to hooligan actions against the journalist, but is related to his other carder crimes. By American standards, it can be called quite soft. Moreover, Carder, apparently, was released right in the courtroom. Perhaps this story will teach Sergey to take a more responsible approach to his life — and he will not make such mistakes again.
But in general, everyone else should keep in mind that Brian Krebs is not to be trifled with.
