To survive, we need to continually select information that is relevant to each specific situation. Of course, sometimes we can change the selection criteria. It happens from time to time by itself, for example, when you decide to buy a new car.

As soon as you decide on a model, you suddenly realize that such cars are everywhere around you. But there are no more of these cars on the roads of the city than before, just your criteria for selecting information has changed. Another example demonstrates how reliable this mechanism is. Every time you go to a foreign city, out of the thousands of license plates you come across exactly those on which your home region is indicated.

We encounter the same phenomenon when communicating with other people. Suppose you come to a party and are alone for a while. You hear a lot of conversations, but you don't specifically listen to any of them. Suddenly someone in the room says your name. With the greatest degree of probability, of all the words spoken around you, you will hear it. You are simply attuned in such a way that you cannot help but react to your name. Here we are talking about the fact that of all the information we receive, we want and can perceive only a certain part of it and, accordingly, we tune in to a certain choice.

Just in this regard, I have a wonderful example from life. Several years ago, on a business trip, my wife and I attended a reception. At our table, besides us, there were twelve more people, and a total of more than a hundred guests were present in the hall. The room was so noisy that it was possible to talk only when close to the interlocutor. But in an instant, complete silence reigned at our table. The reason why all conversations were interrupted in mid-sentence was my neighbor's question: "Can I ask you a personal question?" Unknowingly, he used one of the best attention grabbing techniques.

From our experience, we know that such an introduction is likely to be followed by very interesting information, so we involuntarily begin to listen in anticipation of interesting details. By the way, my neighbor never asked his question.

Based on our experience, we construct expectations and expect that in the future everything will happen as we are accustomed to: "The world is as you expect to see it." Realizing this fact is extremely important.
