With new batteries, Tesla could be invincible.

Today, Tesla confirmed a significant breakthrough in the production of the 4680 battery cell at the Gigafactory in Texas, releasing its 20 millionth cell at this plant.

Information about the production of the 4680 battery cell from Tesla has long remained in the shadows, although it plays a key role for the company's new car models, including the Cybertruck. This element, created by Tesla from scratch, was first introduced to the public at Battery Day in 2020.

Tesla claimed that the new design will reduce the cost of the battery by more than 50%. Despite its ambitions for mass production, it faced a number of challenges.

Today, Tesla announced the production of the 20 millionth 4680 battery cell at its Gigafactory in Texas. This figure is particularly impressive, given that reaching the 10 million mark was announced only in June.

Over the past 16 weeks, Tesla has released 10 million 4,680 battery cells, which is an average of 625,000 cells each week. However, real production figures are probably even higher.

The 4680 cell from Tesla has a capacity of approximately 26 Ah, which corresponds to a capacity of about 100 Wh. So, at the Gigafactory in Texas, the company produces approximately 80 MWh of such elements weekly. With a 65 kWh battery pack, Tesla can produce over 1,200 vehicles per week. For the Cybertruck model with an estimated battery capacity of 130 kWh, this figure can be halved.

Such results are a significant step forward. The annual production is about 4 GWh. And while Tesla's planned 100 GWh per year at the Gigafactory in Texas is still a long way off, the company is already showing impressive rates of mass battery production.
