Olvid and Tchap are becoming the new standard for government communications.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Born announced a ban on the use of WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal messengers for government members. As part of improving cybersecurity, she called for switching to French alternatives-Olvid and Tchap. This information was confirmed by Born in an interview with Le Point magazine and became known thanks to a circular dated November 22, which was reviewed by Tech & Co.
According to the circular's instructions, officials must delete all unapproved messengers by December 8. The main reason for this decision is security vulnerabilities found in popular messaging apps.
Olvid, which has received a first-level security certificate from the French National Agency for Information Systems Security (ANSSI), stands out among other applications thanks to end-to-end message encryption and the ability to synchronize with other devices. Additionally, this messenger provides privacy by not requiring a connection to a phone number and encrypting user metadata.
Tchap is mentioned as the second approved option. This messenger, designed specifically for French civil servants in 2019, unlike Olvid, is not available in public app stores such as the AppStore and Google Play.
