Li-Fi technology to replace local 5G networks and Wi-Fi has received a standard and now bears the index 802.11bb. It is capable of transmitting data 100 times faster than Wi-Fi, and it is also much more secure - it is almost impossible to intercept the signal transmitted with its help. The first routers with Li-Fi support will go on sale in the coming months.

Home Wi-Fi Will Soon Become Obsolete​

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has standardized the Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) wireless data transmission technology, in which the signal is transmitted not via radio waves, as in cellular communications or Wi-Fi, but using ordinary light. The new standard received the index 802.11bb, and it significantly exceeds even the most modern versions of Wi-Fi in terms of data transfer speed .

According to Tom's Hardware, Li-Fi is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi, with photons of light capable of transmitting information at speeds of up to 224 GB/s. Li-Fi will require both receiving and transmitting devices, and standardization of the technology means that router manufacturers can now produce devices that support the technology.

According to the technology's creators, Li-Fi will not interfere with users or create additional strain on the visual apparatus. Light sources used to transmit data will flicker, but at a frequency above 60 Hz, which is imperceptible to the human eye.

Everything is ready now​

Usually, the adoption of a particular communication standard means that devices supporting it will appear a little later, and their mass adoption may even occur after a fairly long period of time. With Li-Fi, everything is the other way around - first the equipment was ready, and only four months later IEEE adopted the standard necessary for promoting the technology to the masses.

Several companies and organizations believe in Li-Fi as a replacement for Wi-Fi, including pureLiFi, Fraunhofer HHI, and Light Communications 802.11bb Task Group. As CNews reported, pureLiFi created a working prototype of a router that converts data bits into photons of light, as well as a receiver that provides the reverse transformation, in the form of a tiny antenna for integration into various devices, back in early March 2023. The device is called Light Antenna ONE and measures around 14.5 mm.

Tests were conducted that showed the new technology was fully functional, meaning it was ready for commercialization in early spring 2023, and it was just a matter of standardization. Now it all depends on router manufacturers - how quickly they will master the serial production of the new type of routers.

As Android Police writes, integrating Li-Fi antennas into smartphones shouldn't be a big problem for smartphone vendors, as they are compatible with regular Wi-Fi modules. Thus, they don't require additional hardware that takes up precious space in the smartphone.

Extreme security as the main drawback​

Li-Fi as a data transfer technology has two main advantages over Wi-Fi and 5G local networks - data transfer speeds measured in hundreds of gigabytes per second and a very high level of security. While a Wi-Fi or cellular network signal can be intercepted, Li-Fi provides 100% protection from hackers, especially if you close the windows in the room with thick curtains.

Li-Fi works in one specific room where both the receiver and the transmitter are located, so accessing this network from the outside will be very problematic. This also leads to the main drawback of the technology - it allows data to be transmitted only within one room, since light rays cannot penetrate walls or doors.

Ideal solution for offices and apartment buildings​

The "locality" of Li-Fi allows this technology to be used in large business centers and apartment buildings, where several Wi-Fi networks are organized on each floor. They all operate at the same frequencies - 2.4, 5 and, more recently, 6 GHz, and the more networks there are, the less stable each of them is due to the overload of wireless ranges.

Li-Fi does not have such a disadvantage - with the help of this technology, you can organize a very fast local wireless network in a separate office or apartment.

Considering that the companies promoting the technology have already developed references for all the equipment needed for its operation, the appearance of its serial samples is a matter of a very short period of time. Experts from the Tom's Hardware portal assume that they will go on sale between July 2023 and February 2024.
