Positive Technologies talked about the current threats of the second quarter of 2023.
Positive Technologies analyzed current cyber threats in the second quarter of 2023. According to the company, the share of targeted attacks was 78%, which is 10% more than at the beginning of the year. Experts note massive attacks through exploiting vulnerabilities and a lot of personal data leaks. In addition, an increase in the number of successful cyber attacks on blockchain projects and a surge in ransomware activity against IT companies were recorded.
According to the study, thesecond quarter of 2023, the number of incidents increased by 17% compared to the same period in 2022. The most common consequences of successful cyber attacks on businesses were leaks of confidential information (67%) and disruption of core business (44%).
The number of attacks using cryptographers in the second quarter of 2023 increased by 13%. Positive Technologies notes an increase in the share of IT organizations among ransomware victims, accounting for 11% of the total number of victims. According to experts, the growth may be due to the fact that successful cyber attacks allow attackers to gain access to confidential information of company customers.
Analysts at Positive Technologies are recording a new trend: cybercriminals are increasingly skipping the encryption stage and blackmailing victims with the publication of stolen data, instead of demanding a ransom for their decryption.
"We observe a tendency for attackers to gradually abandon data encryption as the main tool for exerting pressure on victims. The use of cryptographers requires cybercriminals to make significant efforts to bypass security measures, introduce and deploy malware, " Positive Technologies noted.
According to the study, in addition to new vulnerabilities, attackers actively use old ones. Some incidents, according to analysts, show that vulnerabilities can be attacked even after several years of existence. Therefore, Positive Technologies experts recommend that companies build a vulnerability management process: conduct an inventory of all infrastructure assets, identify vulnerabilities, prioritize them according to the level of danger, including identifying trending ones, set regulations for software updates and monitor the elimination of vulnerabilities.
According to experts, blockchain projects remain an attractive target for attackers. In the second quarter of 2023, they were victims of attacks twice as often as in the previous period. One of the most notable attacks was an incident when hackers broke into the servers of a cryptocurrency exchange in Discord and stole $ 3 million.
Special attention was also paid to the use of spyware in attacks on individuals. According to the study, cybercriminals used spyware in 62% of attacks, which is 23 percentage points more than in the first quarter of 2023.
