Railgun on guard of Japan's security.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense has successfully conducted the world's first test of an electromagnetic railgun from a ship.

The test, conducted on Tuesday in conjunction with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), is a significant step in Japan's quest to develop advanced defense capabilities.

The Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency of Japan (ATLA) announced an achievement on the X platform: "ATLA has tested a railgun on a ship for the first time in the world, in collaboration with the JMSDF."

Japan's goal is to create a missile-based missile interception system. Earlier this year, JMSDF awarded a 10.8 million yen contract for the temporary installation of railguns on ships.

Although the name of the contractor is unknown, it is assumed that Japan Steel Works, Ltd. plays a key role in this project.

An ATLA official confirmed the successful integration of the railgun with the ship and the collection of important information about the impact of the installation on the ship on the gun.

Japan's Defense Ministry plans to create a magnetic missile interception system to counter the threat of hypersonic weapons from China and North Korea.

The electromagnetic railgun fires high-speed projectiles without traditional explosives. It is capable of shooting at a speed of about mach 7 and hitting ships, missiles and planes.

The prototype of the ATLA railgun weighs 8 tons and has a barrel length of 6 meters. According to the prototype, the gun can fire steel bullets weighing 320 g.

Japan successfully conducts test firing from the offshore platform of a medium-caliber marine electromagnetic railgun.

In addition, the new JMSDF combat control system includes railguns, powerful microwave installations, and laser weapons.

For fiscal years 2022 and 2023, as well as the proposed budget for 2024, the Ministry of Defense has allocated significant funds for the development of railgun technology.

The successful test on the ship is an important step in Japan's search for advanced military defense systems.
