European response to global challenges.

In the near future, one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, the Jupiter model, will be launched in Europe . Its uniqueness lies not so much in its record-breaking performance, but in the use of ARM processors instead of traditional x86.

Such exaflops-class supercomputers are capable of a trillion operations per second. Currently, there are no such operations in the top 500, and the leaders only reach petaflops (approximately one billion million operations). But that's about to change, thanks to the European High-Performance Computing Joint Venture (EuroHPC).

Instead of the usual x86, Jupiter will be based on the SiPearl Rhea processor on the ARM architecture with 72 cores. It is more economical and allows you to achieve a higher density of the layout.

It is expected that the assembly of Jupiter will begin in early 2024 on the basis of the supercomputer center in the German city of Jülich. This will be an important milestone in the development of high-performance computing in Europe. Previously, such systems were developed mainly in the United States and Asia.

Jupiter will open up broad opportunities in areas such as climate modeling, materials development, and big data analysis.

The technology will also compete with Intel and AMD, whose processors have traditionally been used in most supercomputers. ARM chips, which are gaining popularity, are not inferior to the rest in terms of performance.

One of the main partners of the project is Nvidia, which will become a supplier of the latest GPU and high-speed network solutions Mellanox. It is not yet clear which graphics chips will be involved, but in any case, they are important for the operation of AI computing.

According to rumors, we are talking about flagship processors based on the Hopper architecture, optimized for neural networks.

Jupiter is just the first of a series of similar projects. Other powerful systems based on European developments are also expected to appear in the coming years. All of them are designed to accelerate progress in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, bioinformatics, and others. And most importantly, it will provide the continent with leadership in the high-tech sector.
