The currency launched by Pavel Durov attracted the attention of cybercriminals.
The new digital currency Telegram Stars, launched in early June, has already become a tasty morsel for scammers. The attackers promise favorable terms for buying "stars" bypassing the App Store and Google Play, but in reality they want to steal personal data and crypto wallets of users.
Pavel Durov announced the launch of Telegram Stars in June and warned users that Apple and Google charge a commission of 30% of the transaction. Durov promised that users will be able to compensate for these costs by paying for advertising of their products using Telegram Stars. He noted that the launch of applications in the messenger makes more economic sense than the interest in traditional mobile resources. Scammers distorted the meaning of Durov's words and offered to get rid of the commission by buying directly from private traders.
According to F.A.C.C.T., since May 16, 23 domain names were registered that are consonant with Telegram and Stars or Ton and Stars, as well as four channels and chatbots in Telegram. Some of these resources were created for subsequent resale or simply contain information about Telegram Stars. This applies to both channels and bots in the messenger itself. However, there are already accounts offering help in buying "stars", which creates a risk for users.
F.A.C.C.T. experts stressed that buying Telegram Stars from intermediaries in the messenger is not safe and does not guarantee the protection of the transaction. There are also possible scenarios with so-called drainers-scammers can offer to get an AirDrop, a free distribution, but for this you need to connect your crypto wallet and then sign a malicious transaction that will allow attackers to withdraw the victim's crypto assets. Another way to cheat is to create fake tokens that mimic the real ones.
The Telegram Stars digital currency was introduced on June 6. Pavel Durov noted that it can be used to pay for goods and services inside the platform, including e-books, online courses and items in games. In addition, channel authors can now publish paid content, which users can unlock for Stars, and convert the earned coins to Toncoin.
Telegram Stars is available for purchase through in-app purchases in the App Store and Google Play, as well as through PremiumBot.
