A new era of cheating with ChatGPT and TI-84.

Over the weekend, a video blogger named ChromaLock posted a video showing how he modified a Texas Instruments TI-84 graphing calculator to connect it to the Internet and access OpenAI's ChatGPT. This could be a new way for students to circumvent exam restrictions. The video, titled "I've Built the Perfect Cheating Device," demonstrates a hardware modification that allows you to enter tasks through a calculator keyboard and get answers from ChatGPT in real-time.

First of all, ChromaLock studied the connection port of the calculator, usually used to transfer educational programs between devices. He then developed a custom PCB called the "TI-32," which includes a Wi-Fi-enabled Seed Studio ESP32-C3 microcontroller (costing about $5) and other components needed to interface with the calculator's systems.

It is worth noting that this invention is not a commercial project. You can repeat the modification described in the video by buying a TI-84, a Seed Studio ESP32-C3 microcontroller and various electronic components, as well as making a custom printed circuit board according to the drawings that ChromaLock has posted in the public domain.

The author of the video also shared that he faced a number of technical difficulties when creating the device, such as voltage incompatibility and signal integrity issues. However, after several iterations, he managed to integrate a custom board into the calculator case so that no changes can be seen from the outside.

In addition to the hardware, the blogger has developed his own software for the microcontroller and calculator, which is available on GitHub as open source. The system mimics the operation of another TI-84, allowing users to use built-in commands to transfer files. This makes it easy to download special programs, one of which provides the ChatGPT interface.

However, despite its wide capabilities, the device has its limitations. Typing long alphanumeric questions on a small calculator keyboard is slow and inconvenient, which somewhat reduces efficiency.

In addition to the interface for working with ChatGPT, the modified calculator offers several other features that make cheating easier. For example, the browser depicted in the video allows you to view pre-loaded images that can serve as cheat sheets. It is also possible to download text files with hints disguised as the source code of programs. In the future, ChromaLock plans to add a camera feature, but details about it remain unknown.

According to the author, his device can bypass common anti-cheat measures, such as blocking calculators in test mode. The downloader program can be downloaded if necessary and can be easily removed before being checked by the teacher.

Although this project is presented as a technical achievement, the use of ChatGPT during the exam through the calculator is likely to be regarded as a violation of academic integrity and could lead to serious consequences.
